That was a particularly bad idea.

A massive blow to Science in the UK
Feb 5th
The STFC have recently massively slashed the budget for Physics in the UK by £80million. It means amongst many other things that the UK will drop out of exceedingly important international research, and many British research programmes will come under threat. It will also make it exceedingly difficult to take up further studies of Physics as a career.
No matter how this is construed, I cannot see anything good coming out of this decision and therefore urge all of you who are eligible to sign this petition and to join this group on facebook, which also plays host to much important information regarding this.
The Importance of Backups
Nov 14th
Ugh.
On updating iTunes and Quicktime my mac froze and upon rebooting I discovered that something went wrong.
Very wrong in fact, with the “Welcome to Leopard” wizard appearing on logon and refusing to let me log in.
One full time machine restore later and my mac is working again, unfortunately it’s now refusing to back up.
But now I’m looking to replace my mac with something home grown again…
New phone and Heroes
Jul 25th
I have recently rejoined the world of the mobile phone user with my purchase of a Sony Ericsson k800i from three, and have to say that I am fairly happy with it as the call quality is very good and three offer the best data plan that I could find. The camera is also quite nice- but I’ll have to see how good the photos come out to really judge that properly- and I’ll be posting a brief review of the phone when I’ve used it for a bit longer.
The first two episodes of Heroes was broadcast on BBC 2 tonight, and I must say that I’m very glad that the BBC have acquired it, as it would be a shame to have it hidden away behind either adverts or a subscription to BSkyB. No spoilers here please. I know we’re amongst the last to get it here.
Last off, I’ll be away from the 29th for a fortnight in Leeds taking a Summer course in East Asian languages (Japanese and East Thai) which I’m really looking forward to.
Move Finished
Jul 13th
Themak.org is now (mostly) happy on it’s new host and WordPress is now running at 2.2.1.
All links from alex.palgn.co.uk should now point to themak.org.
New Version (coming soon) and other miscellaneous updates!
Jun 16th
Here’s a preview of what’s soon going to be the new look of themak.org:

All critisism welcome for the new design.
The new theme is also going to mark a whole new version of themak.org, the move from the brilliant PALGN free hosting to an ASO shared hosting plan where I will also move this blog from WordPress to a hand made django weblog platform.
I now only have 4 exams left until I’ve finished with my GCSEs, and I feel fairly confident about how I’ve done (which is good) and I’m now only a few short days away from purchasing my guitar and hosting package.
The Now Show- New Series & Podcast
Mar 10th
The awesome BBC Radio4 comedy series The Now Show has returned with another series. But what makes it especially cool is that they’re serving them up as a podcast, so if you’ve missed the last two shows (or don’t live in England) you can download them from the beeb. In Germany
Feb 20th
After a 4am start on wednesday, and a long journey- I’m (and have been for the past few days) in Germany on my third German exchange trip. I’ve been taking lots of photos- and should have some good ones to upload. Also, I’ve just bought myself a nice pari of Sennheiser ‘phones (MX-55)
, as my iPod ones are busted.
Photos to come, can’t upload any for a few days.
New Year

Work to be done…
Truffles
Dec 17th
This recipie for chocolate truffles from cooking for engineers produces some really nice truffles. However, buying a melon baller before embarking on it would be a very good idea.
Sorting Algorithms
Dec 10th
Tim just sent me a link to this comprehensive guide to sorting algorithms called sorting out sorting from the seventies.
Java sorting code.
Wikipedia page.
On another note I’m going to have a go at making these. Yum.
